ATLANTA, GA, May 03, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- J. Peter Cegielski, MD, MPH, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Cegielski enjoyed a distinguished career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1998 to 2020 when he semi-retired. Since then, he has been working at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health first as lead Covid-19 advisor from 2021 to 2023 and now as a senior scientist. His extensive experience as a physician, scientist and educator is marked by his successful tenures in academia and at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Recognized internationally as a leading authority on tuberculosis, particularly drug-resistant strains, Dr. Cegielski has made significant contributions to the fields of epidemiology and infectious disease. His discovery of the global emergence of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis has been pivotal in shaping public health responses to this critical challenge.

Prior to his current role at Emory University, Dr. Cegielski served as a team leader and supervisory medical officer at the CDC from 2015 to 2018. From 2001 to 2015, he was a team leader at the same institution, where he began his tenure as a medical officer in 1998. His academic career includes positions as an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health from 1996 to 1998, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler from 1994 to 1996, and at the Duke University Medical Center from 1991 to 1994. Dr. Cegielski also completed an infectious diseases and international health fellowship at the Duke University Medical Center from 1988 to 1990, where he previously served as an internal medicine resident from 1985 to 1987 and an intern at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Dr. Cegielski's expertise extends beyond tuberculosis to include COVID-19, HIV infection, nutrition, infection control, policy development and tropical/parasitic diseases. He is highly skilled in clinical medicine, epidemiological and clinical research, statistical analysis, public health policy and guideline development, and team leadership. His achievements are a testament to his dedication and expertise in his field.

Dr. Cegielski's professional accomplishments were built on a solid educational foundation. He completed his residency and fellowship in internal medicine, infectious diseases and international health at the Duke University Medical Center between 1985 and 1990. He earned a Master of Public Health, with a focus on epidemiology, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1995. Dr. Cegielski previously obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California San Diego in 1984 after graduating cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biochemical sciences from Harvard University in 1978.

Certified in infectious diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine Subspecialty Board in Infectious Diseases since 1990 and in internal medicine since 1987, Dr. Cegielski attributes much of his success to the foundational support of his parents and their influence on his natural aptitude for mathematics and science. This background facilitated his admission to Harvard University and subsequent opportunities that shaped his career path.

Dr. Cegielski's decision to pursue medicine was influenced by his desire to combine his interest in life sciences with humanitarian service. His choice of internal medicine allowed him to engage with a broad spectrum of medical challenges before specializing in infectious diseases and international health through Duke University's fellowship program. His work in Tanzania with HIV/AIDS patients further honed his expertise in infectious disease.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Cegielski has been recognized for academic excellence with such honors as graduating cum laude from Harvard University, receiving an NRSA postdoctoral fellowship in health services research through UNC-Chapel Hill, a CDC Honor Award for excellence in epidemiology, and U.S. Public Health Service Individual Achievement Medal. His scholarly contributions include over 170 publications, many of them on multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment outcomes and strategies for managing drug resistance.

Dr. Cegielski is married to his wife Valerie Robison, who holds Doctor of Dental Surgery, Doctor of Philosophy and Masters of Public Health degrees. Together, they have two children named Jesse and Sai. In his leisure time, Dr. Cegielski enjoys music (he plays violin and mandolin), reading, carpentry, sailing, skiing, spending quality time with family and friends, and rescuing stray animals, serving as a testament to his compassionate nature that extends beyond human health into animal welfare.
