ST. LOUIS, MO, May 17, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Karen Frank Barney, PhD, MS, OTR, FAOTA, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Barney is a well-known figure in the field of occupational therapy, with a career of over five decades dedicated to education, research and practice. Having earned the distinguished title of professor emerita at Saint Louis University in 2013, her tenure was marked by various roles, including assistant professor, associate professor, core faculty of the Geriatric Education Center at the School of Medicine and interim director of the Saint Louis University Prison Program. In this last role, she applied her expertise to develop rehabilitation models for individuals re-entering society from incarceration. This role stands out as one of her proudest achievements, alongside writing her textbook on occupational therapy collaboratively with other disciplines that study and provide services to aging adults.

The foundation of Dr. Barney's illustrious career is built upon a solid educational background. She earned a doctorate in health services research from Saint Louis University in 2002 after completing a fellowship at the School of Public Health associated with the same university in 1998. She also holds a Master of Science in adult and continuing education administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from the same institution. Her dedication to her field is further showcased by her membership in several prestigious organizations, such as the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Gerontological Society of America.

Dr. Barney has also advanced in her industry through contributions to scholarly journals, and having co-authored and edited the textbook "Occupational Therapy with Aging Adults: Promoting Quality of Life Through Collaborative Practice." Beyond academia, she has engaged with several civic organizations through volunteer work with the Saint Louis Urban League and other organizations that focus on the incarcerated.

Dr. Barney attributes her success to her fierce determination and the belief in the importance of education, which was instilled in her by her parents. Her career in academia was propelled by her unique position as the only faculty member with a doctorate degree when their founding chair retired, enabling her to teach research courses no other faculty member could, while also serving as department chair.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Barney enjoys spending time with her family and taking a keen interest in dancing as a hobby. Looking ahead, she aims to finish the revisions of her textbook and return to the prison program to continue her work in developing a rehabilitation model. She also plans to collaborate with her older son on research projects that explore how occupational therapy can address various public health issues.
