ARLINGTON, VA, September 07, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent (OSEHRA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating innovation in electronic health record software, hosted its Second Annual Open Source EHR Summit and Workshop at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in North Bethesda, MD. OSEHRA, under the sponsorship of the Department of Veterans Affairs, continues to drive rapid innovation in electronic health records (EHRs) and Health IT through an open source software process. ---
The Summit brought together the OSEHRA community of software developers, clinicians, business leaders and others practitioners, now totaling more than 2,300 members, and provides an important platform for further exploration of innovative and pioneering models, as well as best practices in technical, clinical and business development.
"The OSEHRA community has made tremendous advancement in open source technologies, and we will continue to work towards improvement in care and lower costs while simultaneously advancing care delivery," said Seong K. Mun, PhD, President and CEO of OSEHRA. "This year, we continued building the conversation around collaborative activities with the Department of Veterans Affairs and DoD, spurring the further growth of the open source EHR industry."
The event included more than 35 eminent panelists and speakers, including government officials, health care leaders, clinical care providers and policymakers. Featured participants include Andrew Aitken, Founder and Managing Partner, Olliance Group, General (Ret) Charles Green, M.D., and David Wheeler, Institute for Defense Analysis. Topics included genomics; VistA Standardization Initiative; refactoring; modern VistA development environment, mobile health; meaningful use; and open architecture, and more, rounding out a robust program of speakers and presentations.
Many of the topics addressed at OSEHRA's Summit will affect the development of health information technology beyond EHRs. Workshops entitled, "Open Source Business Models," "Interoperability," and "Clinical Applications" were led by experts from a variety of health care disciplines. OSEHRA, the engine of rapid innovation, comes together to drive a number of significant, community-based innovation initiatives such as code convergence, the modernization of key components, common web services, meaningful use certification, genomics and m-health.
