/24-7PressRelease/ - CHICAGO, IL, April 13, 2008 — The Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Lambda Sigma sorority at Northern Illinois University will host a 5K to benefit A Silver Lining Foundation on April 13 at 9 a.m. at Hopkins Park in DeKalb, IL. Registration on the day of the event begins at 8 a.m., but pre-registration is encouraged.
"This is the first time Sigma Lambda Sigma and A Silver Lining Foundation are pairing up in the fight against breast cancer," said Dr. Sandy Goldberg, A Silver Lining Foundation founder and on-air television nutrition expert with NBC 5 news. "Proceeds from this 5K will help provide life-saving resources for medically underserved people."
Participants can register online at http://www.sigmalambdasigma.info and sign up for the adult run, adult walk, under 12 run, or under 12 walk. The pre-registration cost for adults is $15 and $20 on the day of the race. For children under 12, the pre-registration cost is $5 and $8 the day of the race. Registration forms and checks, made out to Sigma Lambda Sigma, can be mailed to Sigma Lambda Sigma, 908 Greenbrier Drive, DeKalb, IL, 60115. Race fees are tax deductible.
All ages are welcome to participate in the 5K, but no pets, skateboards, rollerblades or bicycles are allowed on the course. T-shirts will be sold for $10 at the event, and to keep runners and walkers well hydrated, the course will provide a water station.
Since ASLF was launched in 2002 as a 501(c)3 charitable organization by Dr. Sandy
Goldberg, the organization has provided more than 400,000 people with information about cancer resources, treatment options and support services. Through the organization's programs, services and personal support, the foundation strives to provide opportunities for medically underserved people affected by cancer. The organization lives by a phrase Dr. Goldberg's mother used to live by: "No matter what your situation, you have to see the silver lining."
The administrative offices of ASLF are located at 134 N. LaSalle, suite 1218, Chicago, IL 60602. The organization runs several cancer related programs, including BUY A MOM A MAMMOGRAM , the Chicagoland Cancer Information Coalition (CCIC) and The Evelyn Goldberg Center at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. CCIC is comprised of advocacy groups, social service, voluntary and community-based health organizations as well as city and county departments that are dedicated and committed in the fight against cancer. The Evelyn Goldberg Center's services include a library containing a broad range of cancer information and the Evelyn Goldberg Quality of Life Assistance Fund, a financial grant program provides support for patients experiencing difficulty with daily life activities.
