PHILADELPHIA, PA, March 15, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/
-- If you are an adult suffering from malocclusion, chances are the idea of wire and bracket braces is somewhat unappealing. However, not treating malocclusion can result in serious discomfort, eventual tooth loss, and issues such as TMJ. It is possible that your dentist has told you how important it is to address your malocclusion, but you may not know all of your options for adult orthodontics
Orthodontic Solutions for Adults
The goal of adult orthodontics is to provide a fast, unobtrusive, and effective solution for malocclusion. When your malocclusion is mild, this can often be accomplished through porcelain veneers. Sometimes called "instant orthodontics," porcelain veneers can address minor cases of malocclusion in as little as two weeks, but this solution is not effective for moderate to severe bite issues.
For more pronounced malocclusion, your dentist may recommend adult orthodontic solutions including:
- Clear braces - With clear brackets and see-through wires, these braces perform the same function as traditional models without the overly noticeable appearance
- Lingual braces - Placed behind the teeth, these braces are less noticeable, but equally effective at correcting even severe malocclusion
- Invisalign - Using clear, removable plastic aligner trays, Invisalign can correct mild to moderate malocclusion in as little as 12 months
- Neuromuscular orthodontics - If your malocclusion is caused by TMJ, your dentist can use neuromuscular dentistry treatments to address the issue
When adults have untreated malocclusion, treatment with traditional braces can take upwards of three years. When possible, many dentists prefer options such as Invisalign or instant orthodontics to decrease treatment time while still improving the strength and appearance of your bite. However, if your malocclusion is more pronounced, wire and bracket braces may be necessary. This is best determined by an experienced orthodontist in your area.
