The correct application of pool chemicals is one of the most critical aspects of swimming pool care. Chemicals are used to keep water clear, balanced, sanitized, and free from algae.
Water balancers are used to keep the pools pH, alkalinity, and hardness and the right levels. Examples of chemicals commonly used to do this include pH increasers or decreasers, alkalinity increasers or decreasers, and calcium hardness increasers.
Water sanitizers keep the water clean. Common examples include chlorine and bromine. These work in similar ways, but bromine tends to be more gentle on swimmers.
Algaecides are used for the removal of algae growth. Quaternary Ammonia and Polyquats are used for this purpose, but Polyquats is generally reserved for more severe cases.
Water clarifiers keep pool water looking clear. Metal removers prevent staining by lowering levels of copper, iron, and other metals. Stain and scale inhibitors have a similar function, but their stain prevention comes from lowering mineral levels.
"It's good for anyone to have a working knowledge of common pool chemicals and what they do, but in my opinion it's even more important that they understand the potential dangers they pose to children and pets," explains Greg Stephens, Owner of Pinnacle Pool Services.
