December 06, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- You consider yourself a conscientious driver in Boston. You always look twice before making a turn, obey all traffic laws and act courteously to other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. However, regardless of how careful you are, you could easily find yourself the victim of a car accident.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security reports over 136,000 traffic accidents occurred in the state during 2008. Out of that number, more than 3,700 serious injuries were documented and 363 people died. With so many accidents taking place, it is important to protect yourself before you are in one.

Carefully consider what you should say

When you are in a collision, you automatically go into a state of shock and may say something that will harm you in the investigation and in any claims for injury that you may need to make. It is important to remember that everything you say can be used as evidence. For example, telling someone that you are sorry could give the impression that you are taking responsibility for the accident.

The same is true when it comes to giving information about your physical, mental and psychological condition.

Know your insurance policy

Your insurance policy is designed to provide a protective buffer for you if you are injured or your car is damaged in a car accident. According to Edmunds, you should take the time to review the features of it to make sure it will provide you with the help you need. As you review your policy, you may want to ask yourself the following questions:
- Can I afford my deductible?
- Will I be able to pay for towing?
- Will I need a rental car while mine is being repaired?
- Am I sufficiently covered if I am hit by a driver who is uninsured/underinsured?

If you find that your insurance policy is lacking, then you still have the time to change the policy, preventing any unpleasant surprises later on.

Create an accident kit

An accident kit can help you gather the information that you need to protect your legal rights and keep you prepared in the event of a collision. The accident kit should contain a flashlight, warning flares, a disposable camera (you can omit this if your phone camera takes clear pictures), a list of allergies and medical conditions, paper and pencil and accident forms.

You can create the accident forms yourself or you may be able to get some from your insurance agent. The forms capture details pertaining to the accident such as weather conditions, date and time of the collision, who was involved, witnesses, road conditions, location, speed and even the name of the officer who handles the investigation.

Preparing for an accident is a good way to protect yourself from legal complications. If you are in an accident, you should make one of your first calls to a qualified attorney who can provide you with legal guidance.
