-- Shaun Ward Vestguard
founder, understands that business leadership is an integral aspect of running a successful company. Through such leadership, entrepreneurs are able to inspire change in their industry by creating a product, service, or both that meets the needs of clients while building an organization that takes care of its employees, encourages innovation, and instills a sense of pride in its team members. But the truth is, according to an article published by Time, not everyone is well suited for a leadership role. Here, Ward shares the self assessment tools that the article provides to help professionals decide if they are up for the challenges of leadership. Additionally, Ward offers his own insight on what makes great leaders successful.
According to the article, too many people take on leadership positions for which they are not prepared because they do not honestly assess their own capabilities. As such, the quality of leadership that is in place in many organizations is not as high as it ought to be, both because leaders are not strategically chosen and because those who are natural leaders but do not assess their skills are not likely to engage in the professional development necessary to move teams forward.
To break this cycle, the article encourages professionals to consider three points before taking on a leadership position. The first is whether or not they lead when they need to or all of the time. Effective leaders, the article contends, know when to stand back. The second issue to consider is whether or not individuals can differentiate between leadership and action, as these two activities are often confused. Finally, the article puts forth the question of whether outcomes or the professional performance of a team is the most important to an individual. Oftentimes, leaders will reach their goals but, as the article explains, burn out their staff in the process.
"If you want to lead successfully it is important to be able to step up to the challenge when action is needed, but it is just as crucial to step back and watch things grow from afar when the time is right," comments Shaun Ward, Vestguard founder. "It's about accepting and knowing good advice. I find that other people help give me vision and I merely draw the map to get to where I want to be. We set off on the journey together, rather than independently. A true leader offers hope and well thought out solutions and is always able to justify the reasoning behind tough decisions. No matter what, a leader must use their talent and believe in themselves."
Ward encourages anyone who is interested in taking on a leadership position to go over these three issues and decide if they are ready to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.
