Cambridge Who's Who Names Martha V. Diehl Professional of the Year in Nonprofit & Community Service

Martha Diehl oversees the Institute for Canine Studies, which teaches people to train dogs to help people

MONTEREY, CA, February 28, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Martha V. Diehl, MPP, Acting Executive Director for the Institute for Canine Studies, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Nonprofit & Community Service. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.

For the last four years, Ms. Diehl has served as the acting executive director for the Institute for Canine Studies, a new nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the wait for a trained service dog for those in need, mainly by training trainers and promoting the profession. This effort is currently exploring a partnership with CSU Monterey Bay as a way to expand its impact. She uses her expertise in community organizing, conflict resolution and consensus building to develop the institute and promote all the ways people and dogs can live healthier and more fulfilling lives together.

Ms. Diehl's accomplishments extend to her public service. She is one of the first women in the United States to attend any U.S. federal service academy. After serving for more than 20 years as an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, she retired in 1999. For the last seven years of her service she served as captain of cable installation and repair vessels during ship construction and operation worldwide — the only woman to date to achieve this position. Attributing her success to her passion for helping people, Ms. Diehl became involved in her profession because she likes to make a difference, and has a passion for bringing people together.

In 2006, Ms. Diehl received a Master of Public Policy from California State University Monterey Bay. In 1979, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Additionally, she completed the Alternate Dispute Resolution Certificate Program at the University of California Santa Cruz in 1999. She is also a long-time Monterey County Planning Commissioner. Looking forward, Ms. Diehl seeks professional growth as well as a run for county supervisor. She would also like to start writing about her life.
