When an explosion caused a fire at a textile chemical plant located in Morganton, North Carolina in 2006, it was reported that one of the 14 workers injured, was seriously burned. No reason was given for how the explosion happened but the incident was a painful reminder of the risks associated with working around chemicals.

Often for a person severely injured from a chemical burn, there can be several consequences and challenges that await them.

Serious health consequences

According to the American Burn Association, three percent of all burns treated at a hospital with a burn center are attributed to chemicals. While minor chemical burns can often be cared for at home, a more serious chemical burn will require treatment in a burn unit.

Symptoms of serious chemical burns:
-Cardiac arrest
-Headaches
-Faintness
-Seizures
-Blood pressure drops
-Trouble breathing

Some chemical burns cause permanent damage such as blindness, gastrointestinal tract damage, and seizures.

Financial impacts

When a person is burned by a chemical, the accident can affect their lives financially as well as personally. Medical care is not cheap and just a few days in the hospital can result in extraordinary medical expenses. If the burn is severe, those costs can soar as the person endures, among other things, months of rehabilitation, round the clock care and surgical grafts. In addition, the injured party may be disabled from employment for an extended period of time thereby increasing the financial strain and burden on his or her family.

Receiving compensation for your burn injury

Under the law, if you suffer a burn injury due to the negligence of another party, you may be entitled to recover compensation from the negligent party for your injuries. The range of compensation can include damages for past and future medical expenses, past and future lost wages, pain and suffering, permanent impairment and disfigurement. In addition, if the burn injury occurred on the job, you will likely be entitled to receive workers' compensation benefits to cover your medical expenses and to provide disability payments while you are out of work. You may also receive compensation for any permanent impairment to your body from the burn. If you suffer a burn injury, it is important to contact an attorney who is experienced in handing burn injury cases to discuss your legal rights and options.
