VICTORIA, BC, CANADA, October 09, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Chemists Without Borders, an organization focusing on solving humanitarian problems, has partnered with IdeaConnection, an industry leader in open innovation and solving R&D challenges, to come up with solutions to four humanitarian challenges, including:---
1) The Arsenic Penny-per-Test Challenge that is seeking a simple test that would detect arsenic levels in groundwater;
2) The Arsenic Removal Water Filter Challenge that is looking for a water filter design that would remove arsenic from water to less than 5 ppb;
3) The Contaminated Water Testing "Tool Kit" Challenge that needs an analytical tool kit that would identify major impurities in water; and
4) The Electronic Waste Challenge that is seeking a design for an action plan to alleviate the health and safety risks to uneducated and underprivileged workers who extract metals from e-waste.
Chemists Without Borders has now added a fifth challenge to the mix. Clean water is the foundation for health - for prevention and control of waterborne diseases and for prevention of acute and chronic health problems from mercury, lead, arsenic, and chemical contaminants. Cost effective contaminated water treatments are critical for the 2.6 billion people currently without access to clean water. Over 10% of the global disease burden could be prevented by improved water quality.
The Contaminated Water Treatment "Tool Kit" Challenge is seeking a design for a portable tool kit for treating water for major contaminants (biological, organic, inorganic) that is effective, inexpensive, and easy to manufacture and use. The kit must be cost-effective for production and preferably can be assembled within local communities in developing regions.
