"nose job," the plastic surgery procedure called rhinoplasty will improve the appearance, and sometimes the functionality, of your nose. During the surgery, nasal bones and cartilage may be modified and tissue may be added.
There are two kinds of techniques that can be used for
rhinoplasty: "closed" surgery and "open" surgery. The difference has to do with where your
plastic surgeon makes the incision to access the nose interior.
Open Rhinoplasty Surgery
With
open rhinoplasty surgery, an incision is made at the base of the columella. The columella is the strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. The skin of the nose is then pulled back, allowing the surgeon to completely see and shape all cartilages and bones.
Some considerations about open rhinoplasty:
• Some surgeons prefer this surgery to closed rhinoplasty because they believe it gives them better visibility.
• Many surgeons feel this method is less superior to a closed rhinoplasty because it decreases the surgeon's ability to adequately judge how the nose will look after the surgery is complete and increases the risk to the patient.
• The incisions from open rhinoplasty can potentially leave visible scars.
• Open rhinoplasty can be helpful in complex cases, such as cleft lip operations, or when a previous rhinoplasty has left a nose pulled too high and structural grafts are necessary to bring the nostrils down.
• In general, bruising and swelling lasts longer with open rhinoplasty.
Closed Rhinoplasty Surgery
A closed rhinoplasty procedure means the surgical incision is made to the inside of the nose.
Some considerations about closed rhinoplasty:
• The closed rhinoplasty, which is less invasive, takes less time to complete than an open rhinoplasty.
•
Nose surgery recovery tends to be faster than with closed rhinoplasty.
• Closed rhinoplasty, in general, requires a more experienced surgeon.
• There will be less numbing at the tip of the nose after a closed rhinoplasty surgery.
• For most patients, the closed rhinoplasty option means no risk of external scarring.
