LOS ANGELES, CA, March 03, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC) will join congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) as co-chair of the National Eating Disorders Awareness Caucus, the mission of which is to increase national awareness about eating disorders and support those who suffer by seeking to enhance prevention, facilitate therapeutic advances and improve access to treatment.

Cognizant of the fact that federal funding for such measures is limited in austere times, the caucus will emphasize coordination with private-sector organizations and initiatives.

The announcement comes during NEDA's 26th annual National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAwareness Week), Feb. 24-March 2, part of an ongoing mission to bring public attention to the critical need to raise awareness and funding to battle eating disorders in the U.S.

Commented Ellmers, "I'm honored to have the opportunity to serve as co-chair of the National Eating Disorder Caucus and would like to thank the National Eating Disorders Association for the work they are doing to spread the message on an issue that affects millions of Americans. More needs to be done to educate the public on this so that individuals and their families can receive adequate treatment and services to live a healthy, happy life. I'm excited to see the innovative research that is under way and look forward to working with my colleagues in the caucus in the months ahead."

Added Lynn Grefe, president and CEO of NEDA, "We're delighted congresswoman Ellmers is taking on this important leadership position and we look forward to working with her in our fight against eating disorders."

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), headquartered in New York City, is the leading U.S. non-profit organization supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders. NEDA serves as a catalyst for prevention, cures and access to quality care. Each year, NEDA helps millions of people across the country find information and appropriate treatment resources through its toll-free, live helpline, its many outreach programs and website. NEDA advocates for advancements in the field and envisions a world without eating disorders. For more information, visit http://www.MyNEDA.org
