/24-7PressRelease/ -- New data released from Creditplus.co.uk, a leading car finance provider, has revealed that the most popular used car sold in 2011 was the Vauxhall Astra. The Vauxhall Astra accounted for
5.39% of all cars Creditplus funded last year and just beat the BMW 3 series that accounted for
5.27%. The final vehicle to make up the top 3 cars is the Ford Focus with
4.98%.
For the second year in a row the top three selling vehicles have stayed the same showing that consumer taste is still fairly consistent. Although the top three vehicles purchased on
car finance are the same, it is the Astra and the 3 Series that have jumped from second and third in 2010 to first and second in 2011.
Comparing the current data with that of 5 years ago (2006) shows that there are still strong similarities. In 2006 the Ford Focus was the top selling used car, followed by the Vauxhall Astra and the Land Rover Freelander. This shows that over even five years later two of the top three selling cars are still in the top three. This shows excellent consistency for Ford and Vauxhall and the continued popularity of their Focus and Astra models.
Elsewhere in the top 20 the premium German brands are well represented with the Audi A3 and A4, the BMW 1 Series and 3 Series, and the Volkswagen Golf. Although these brands do well it is Ford and Vauxhall who dominate the
used car list with sharing 7 models in the top twenty between the two manufactures.
Shaun Armstrong, Managing Director of creditplus.co.uk comments:
"It is clear to see the 'family favourites' are still extremely popular. Many consumers don't even look past Ford and Vauxhall before making a choice about their next vehicle.
"This is hardly surprising though as these cars have proved to be highly reliable over the last 10 years. They also come well equipped and can be purchased for a reasonable price. All in all they represent a very good choice for consumers."
Although many reports have shown that consumers are downsizing when buying new vehicles, it seems the used car market is less concerned about the economy of running their vehicles. Market research conducted by Creditplus in October 2011 shows that only 13% of buyers are looking for greener or more economical cars with lower CO2 emissions. The same research showed that just
9% are going to downsize to smaller car to save money.
The data from used car sales from Creditplus also backs up this data. In 2006 40% of the top 20 cars sold were large vehicles. In 2011 this has risen to 50% of the top 20 vehicles being large cars. Knowing the top selling used cars and combining this with market research data helps Creditplus to understand the behaviour and the needs of their car finance customers. It also helps the customer advisors to monitor the most popular cars to ensure they have a constant supply of high quality vehicles.
