A consummate psychology professional, Dr. Spanier specializes in treating patients suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, trauma, anxiety, and depression. As a Diplomate Sports Psychologist, Dr. Spanier also provides scientifically informed comprehensive psychological care that contributes to the overall well-being of athletes and coaches. She is proud to run a successful private practice where she is able to assist her clients with issues pertaining to mind-body health and well-being. A gifted international speaker, she delivers lectures on topics ranging from depression to smoking cessation. She is a published author and contributed to the book 'Psychotherapy Indications and Outcomes,' written by David Janowsky as well as the article 'The Relationship Between Tamoxifen, Estrogen, and Depressive Symptoms.' Dr. Spanier was head of the research team that produced the scholarly article 'Maintenance Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Recurrent Depression: Biological and Clinical Correlates and Future Directions,' a work that tackles the question of psychotherapy's value as maintenance treatment for what is often a biologically based disorder.
Dr. Spanier received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997, her Master of Science in Communication Disorders in 1982 and her Bachelor of Science in Communication in 1981 from Marquette University.
She is a member of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder national professional network and the National Institute of Sports, Psychology Division, as well as both a Pittsburgh and national member of the all volunteer American Association of University Women, an organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.
