-- As with many large metropolitan areas, driving in Dallas has risks. In fact, Yahoo! says Dallas has some of the worst drivers in the country. Drivers in Dallas face a 35 percent higher chance of getting into an accident
than the national average. The size and population of the city, along with crowded and twisting roads, has a great deal to do with the increased risk of accidents, but drivers also play a large part.
According to City-Data.com, there were 103 fatal accidents in Dallas in 2011. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes Texas has some of the highest traffic accident-related medical and work loss costs in the country, reporting a staggering $3.5 billion spent in 2005.
Common causes of accidents in Dallas
Not surprisingly, drunk driving has been a common cause of crashes
in Dallas -- and the rest of the country -- for many years. To illustrate this point, last month a police officer was injured when a pickup truck ran a red light and hit the officer's patrol car in the middle of the intersection. The driver of the pickup was charged with DWI. The Century Council says that drunk driving can be attributed to 31 percent of all traffic deaths. In 2011, there were 1,213 fatalities from drunk driving in Texas.
Other major causes of accidents include negligent and distracted driving, especially texting while driving. About one in five accidents in the U.S today are caused by a distracted driver. Incidents of crashes caused by a driver texting or using a cell phone are increasing, and it can be expected that even more texting and driving and distracted driving crashes will be reported in the Dallas-Metro area.
Contacting an attorney
No matter what caused an accident, traffic injuries often result in high medical bills or funeral expenses. Long-term care or physical therapy can cause medical expenses to increase even further. In addition, many car accident victims are unable to work for weeks or months after being injured, only adding to their financial troubles.
If you've been injured as a result of another driver's negligence, it's important to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney right away. As a victim, you have rights that may include compensation for your medical expenses. Also, families who have suffered the loss of a loved one in a car crash may be eligible to have some expenses paid for by the person who caused the accident.
