Earlier this year, two buildings in downtown Philadelphia collapsed, injuring 14 people and killing six others. A construction company was in the process of removing a four-story building and, during the demolition, the structure fell onto a neighboring property, crushing numerous occupants and workers.

In the wake of the deadly accident, investigators revealed numerous safety violations committed by the construction company and the contractor in charge of the project. The companies willfully and negligently failed to follow basic safety measures -- sacrificing worker safety -- by removing structural supports and building floors at the lower levels before demolishing the upper levels. Due to numerous Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard violations, the companies were fined hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Despite the amount of publicity caused by the disaster, Philadelphia city council members found out about additional construction and demolition incidents in subsequent weeks that caused personal injuries to more workers and area residents. The council immediately began revamping the city's safety protocols in an effort to avoid future catastrophes. While injured workers are entitled to numerous benefits under workers' compensation law in Pennsylvania, many accidents should never have occurred in the first place.

Common construction injuries

Many workplace accidents are preventable. Adherence to safety measures and avoidance of hazardous conditions can go a long way to prevent worker injuries. Also, awareness by employers and workers of the most frequent causes of work-related injuries is a key factor in reducing deaths and debilitating injuries.

According to OSHA statistics, most workplace accidents generally fall into a few common categories, such as the following:
-Moving objects: Thrown, falling or moving objects commonly cause worker injuries, especially on construction sites. While hardhats may help in some situations, many objects are too large or may strike an employee from the side -- like a moving or exploding piece of machinery.

-Hitting objects: Striking stationary objects often cause injuries to employees in the workplace. Stubbing a toe on a chair leg, banging one's knee on a desk or walking into a post or doorframe are all examples of these types of injuries.

-Overexertion: Overexertion is the number one cause of workers' compensation claims. Injuries caused by lifting, pulling, throwing, carrying or pushing items commonly require medical treatment.

-Trips, slips and falls: Falling from heights due to faulty safety equipment or from tripping or slipping can be fatal no matter how high up an employee is. Proper use of protection gear can reduce falls but will not help much with slips or trips at ground level. Diligently keeping the workplace free of hazards and vigilant awareness of one's surroundings can go a long way to prevent these types of accidents.

What to do when injured

If you, or someone you know, are injured in a workplace accident, consult an experienced workers' compensation lawyer. An attorney experienced with personal injuries and work comp claims can help you obtain the medical treatment, wage losses and benefits to which you may be entitled.
