/24-7PressRelease/ - PANAMA CITY, PANAMA, June 26, 2008 -- The Panama Canal is a man-made canal that was built to link the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and to open up a shipping route between the two bodies of water. In 1880 this unbelievable feat of engineering seemed like a wild dream and concept, and was not completed until 1914. The project took the lives of many brave people, with more than 27,000 people dead before the waterway was completed. The extension of the Panama Canal has now begun, but this time under a heading of 'Decent Work' to avoid the same disaster happening twice.

Edwin Salamin Jaen who is the Labour Minister of Panama spoke to the members of the International Labour Conference (ILO) about the project plans for the Panama Canal. He stated that Panama is entrusted with the task of the Panama Canal extension and that they will do their utmost to ensure that the workers will remain safe. He said that over 7000 jobs have been created with this project and that all of the companies that are involved will do what they can to maintain the work in the category of decent work.

The President of the ILO has said that they will be keeping an eye on the new project which is set to be complete in 2014. It is the start of a large project, and everyone wants to ensure that it will not have the same devastating loss of lives as the first time.

The original engineering of the Panama Canal was an incredible feat, during which many people lost their lives due to disease and on the job accidents. Decent Work principles have been incorporated in the extension of the canal to avoid the same loss of lives. Although the workers on the new project will certainly be facing hardship and danger, they will also be protected by the different companies involved and under the heading of Decent Work. Decent Work principles include and promote extra safety on the jobs, labour rights, as well as care for the families of the workers. These principles are considered to be of the utmost importance by the members of the ILO, who deem it to be a necessary means for many economic activities.

Action to extend the Panama Canal began in September and will increase the capacity of the canal as well as guarantee its workability for future generations. The entire history of the Panama Canal has been an incredible accomplishment, and the Government of Panama has said that they consider the project to be of the utmost importance. With the extension work under the heading of Decent Work, people involved in the project can feel safe in the knowledge that their country is doing what they can to protect them. The new extension will accommodate many more cargo ships from all over the world, and will be another amazing accomplishment upon completion in 2014.
