ROSLYN, NY, July 10, 2009 /Cambridge Who's Who/ -- Dr. Christopher L. La Mendola, of CardioThoracic Surgery, P.C. and St. Francis Hospital, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of healthcare.

With 24 years of professional experience, Dr. La Mendola has excelled in off pump coronary bypass surgery, minimally invasive aortic valve surgery and mitral valve procedures. He is responsible for performing open heart surgeries, conducting hospital rounds, seeing postoperative patients and making consultations.

After finishing his residency, Dr. La Mendola entered a private practice at St. Francis Hospital and has been there ever since. While at St. Francis, he pioneered the off-pump coronary bypass surgery. He was one of the first surgeons in the country to perform the procedure, and to date, has performed more than 1,500 operations, representing one of the largest experiences in the United States. He was also one of the first surgeons in New York to perform minimally invasive aortic valve replacements, and presently is one of only a handful of surgeons in the country who has, on multiple occasions, successfully performed a minimally invasive repair of an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm.

Dr. La Mendola became involved in his profession due to the inspiration he received after reading a book called 'The Heart' while in third-grade. Since then, he read everything he could about the wonderful advances in heart surgery being made by surgical pioneers like Michael DeBakey, Denton Cooley, Christian Barnard. In 1985, he received his MD, from SUNY Stony Brook. Dr. La Mendola received his Bachelor of Science in 1981 from the University of Michigan.

In addition to being a charter member for Alpha Omega Alpha, Dr. La Mendola is a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Medical Society of the State of New York and the Nassau County Medical Society. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. He received the 'One of America's Top Surgeons' recognition from the Consumers' Research Council of America. Dr. La Mendola also received the 'One of the Best Doctors in New York' recognition from New York Magazine, the 'One of the New York Metro Area's Top Doctors' recognition from the Castle-Connolly Guide and the 'One of Long Island's Top Doctors' recognition from Newsday.
