AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, January 29, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Hinemoa Elder, Associate Professor of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, has been recognized by Worldwide Branding for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in higher education.

Dr. Elder has 14 years of experience in the field, with a year in her current role. She has expertise in child and adolescent psychiatry, indigenous issues pertaining to psychiatry in general, neuropsychiatry and youth forensic psychiatry. She is a medical doctor and clinician and also maintains a private practice.

Her current duties include preparing to undertake the four-year programme of her Health Research Council of New Zealand Eru Pomare Post Doctoral Fellowship, which commences in February 2014. This year, she was invited to participate in a month-long summer school and neurological research think tank at the University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain, where she worked to strengthen international collaborative research partnerships.

Dr Elder is one of a very small number of child and adolescent psychiatrists with experience in working with whānau in the context of traumatic brain injury. This includes questioning in what ways western approaches to research and practice work for Māori and methods needed to investigate issues that have salience for Māori. This work also includes maintaining longstanding relationships with all levels of stakeholders related to Māori health and well-being and connections at the complex interface of traumatic brain injury, including areas of youth forensics, policy, service development, education, care and protection, police, courts, judges and primary care. A recently published book called "The New Zealand Mental Health Act in practice" (Victoria University Press) includes a chapter co-written by Dr. Elder.

In five years, Dr. Elder aims to be part of a global center of excellence for indigenous research. She will focus on the transforming qualities of community research agenda in action. Dr. Elder attributes her success to her hard work, determination, love for what she does, and ability to synthesize meaning from an indigenous perspective. She is proud to be of service in the community and finds reward in trying to make a difference. She became involved in her profession because her mother had breast cancer, and they had a lot of contact with health professionals.

A doctoral graduate of Massey University in 2012, her Ph.D. was supervised by professors Sir Mason Durie, Chris Cunningham, and Richard Faull, Dr. Elder also holds a postgraduate certificate in forensic psychology from the University of Otago, which she earned in 2012, and a M.B.Ch.B. from The University of Auckland, earned in 1999. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and has a certificate in child and adolescent psychiatry, both since 2006.

Recently inducted into Worldwide Branding, Dr. Elder also maintains affiliations as an international member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; as a Fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists; as a deputy member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal; and as a medical consultant of the IDCCR Act 2003.

Dr. Elder was awarded the Eru Pomare Post Doctoral Fellowship by the Health Research Council of New Zealand to continue the work she completed in her doctorate. She also supports the different charitable organizations including the New Zealand Coast Guard and the International Red Cross.
