DURHAM, NC, February 08, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Birth of a Colony," a film by three North Carolina organizations about the state's early history, won the Best Documentary/Historical Film award at the Midsouth Emmy Awards on Saturday, Jan. 26. "Birth of a Colony" presents the story of North Carolina from the 1524 arrival of European explorers to the close of the Tuscarora War in 1713.

Horizon Productions, UNC-TV, and the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources collaborated to produce this first in a planned series. At the ceremony held in Nashville, TN, Horizon Productions' President Donna Mitchell and Vice President Tim Finkbiner accepted the Emmy award. Both were deeply involved with the "Birth of a Colony" film's planning, development, production and distribution.

Mitchell stated, "We are delighted that the program was recognized with an Emmy. "Birth of a Colony" was conceived as the first episode in a six-part series about North Carolina's rich history. Our work now turns to raising the required funds to finish that vision. Like the first episode, each series episode will be broadcast on UNC-TV and distributed to schools statewide."

The N.C. Department of Cultural Resources and UNC-TV distributed "Birth of a Colony" DVDs and educational guides to North Carolina's public schools. The broadcast, DVD, and educational guide are an integrated package intended to increase exposure and knowledge exchange for our state's history.

And the dedicated efforts of Horizon's team and UNC-TV's Scott Davis, along with a panel of historians specializing in colonial history, ensured the accuracy of the documentary. "Nobody gets here alone. Many talented people contributed to the success of the film - from story development and writing to photography, editing, music composition and sound design. Everyone worked very hard to create a program we're all proud of, and one that will connect with North Carolinians for years to come," stated Finkbiner.
