Five years ago, Linda Mills, a new grandma, wondered what special toy she could bring her toddler granddaughter to play with during her visits. After going to the big toy stores she still didn't know what to buy—everything seemed so mass-produced, and somehow not meaningful. And then she thought to herself--what have I been doing for the last 30 years?
Consulting in the field of early care and education is what Linda has been doing, running her own company, Mills Consulting Group, Inc., providing research and consultation services to a wide variety of clients, from corporate employers and universities looking to start up child care centers, to government agencies studying their child care workforce.
Linda thought, what better way to combine her knowledge of early care and education with her desire to actively be a part of her grandchildren's development than to create her own "toy"? So Linda began to pack craft materials in a large cloth bag, and totted the bag with her whenever she visited her grandkids, which soon grew to seven in all. Along with the bag she brought ideas for fun projects that were process-focused, based on her many years of experience in the field. It became known to the family as "grandma's project bag", and the grandkids looked forward to grandma's visits and the time they spent together creating fun things.
In October 2007, at the urging of her own children and her friends with grandkids of their own, Linda began developing Grandma's Project Bag. The bag itself contains everything needed for simple craft projects for young children, including an Idea Booklet, a tote bag, and 8 different types of craft materials, from pom poms and stickers to a miniature rolling pin for play dough.
The product was formally launched in December, and orders have been coming in from retail educational toy stores and specialty shops, and just been made available online. "This is such an exciting new way for me to bring together the two things that I truly care about—my family and my passion for early childhood education, as well as share with other grandparents the simple ways they can connect with their own grandkids". wants to spend meaningful and fun time with the children they care about.
