Extra Home Insurance Available for Holiday Crime Increase
InsuranceAgents.com releases a guide suggesting homeowners consider adding special coverage for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

CHICAGO, IL, November 27, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It's Christmastime: presents are under the tree, the family is asleep after a night of caroling and drinking eggnog. But many homeowners may not be thinking about what--or who--is lurking downstairs. Crime statistics show that the holidays are peak season for home robberies. To protect one's home and belongings, it's a good idea for homeowners to increase their home insurance coverage during holidays.

According to a recent InsuranceAgents.com article, "Boost Home Insurance During Christmas & Holidays," insurance providers witness a flood of home insurance claims during the holiday season, mostly due to unfortunate home burglary, or holiday-related incidents like home fires or injuries.

To avoid home fires, burglaries, financial loss, and have having to file a home insurance claim this holiday season, homeowners can do two things: boost home insurance coverage (that way, the homeowner knows their claim will be covered under their policy instead of denied due to insufficient coverage), and practice holiday home safety.

Some holiday safety tips that will reduce home insurance claims and costs include:

1. Using flame retardant holiday decorations
2. Placing candles in safe areas, or even not using lit candles at all
3. Not overloading extension cords
4. Being cautious when changing Christmas light bulbs
5. Keeping pets and children away from potentially dangerous decor as well as the kitchen while holiday dinners are being cooked
6. Never leaving still-cooking food in the kitchen unattended
7. Hiding away valuables, like jewelry and Christmas presents (putting them under the tree is the first place a burglar will look, so make sure they're somewhere safe)

Since Christmas Eve and Christmas are among the top five days a year for home fires and burglaries, "U.S. Homeowners should consider the ... holiday season as a chance to update their home insurance policy. They should also include extra home insurance coverage to the policy, even if it's just temporary, in case a Christmas disaster isn't fully covered by the original policy," according to InsuranceAgents.com.

Boosting home insurance and holiday safety are a must if homeowners want to make this holiday a chance to have peace of mind and enjoy the spirit of the season.
