Fay L. Bower, Ph.D., is hereby recognized for her professional longevity and excellence in the field of nursing and nursing education. As Chairwoman for the Department of Nursing at Holy Names University - she has held the position for nearly a decade - Dr. Bower conducts healthcare research, acts as a nursing consultant and teaches students in the field of nursing. Dr. Bower is widely accepted at the university as an expert on evidence-based practice, research and community healthcare.
Dr. Bower's resume spans an impressive 54 years, beginning in 1955, when she took an office nurse position at a private practice in Palo Alto, California. She held that position for five years until joining the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Stanford Hospital in 1960. In 1965, she received her bachelor of science in nursing from San Jose State University. In 1966, she earned a master of science from the University of California in San Francisco, where she would later earn her Ph.D. in nursing. The year 1966 marked Dr. Bower's entry into higher education - she became an assistant professor at the Department of Nursing of San Jose State University. Since then, Dr. Bower's career has thrived - she has been director of several university departments and even served as President of Clarkson College at Omaha in Nebraska from 1991 to 1997, during which time she developed the school into an efficient and profitable instate. She has taught at universities across California, and as a visiting professor in Arkansas, Mississippi and Beirut, Lebanon. Additionally, she served as the acquisitions editor for books for Sigma Theta Tau International, a leading nursing society, from 1999 until last year and as president of STTI from 1993-1995 and as president of three local chapters of STTI.
Dr. Bower also maintains a large list of professional affiliations attesting to her passion for and active status in her field. Just a couple of her professional organizations include the Nu Xi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the American Cancer Society and as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She has been recognized by such organizations by a myriad of awards throughout the course of her career. This year, Cambridge Who's Who named Dr. Bower its 2009 "Professional of the Year in Healthcare Education." Only two of 400,000 members are chosen for such an honor each year in their respective industries. When asked what were the driving forces behind her motivation to accomplish so much in her career, Dr. Bower noted that it was her father who inspired her to achieve all that she had.
