Children bring a unique kind of joy to their parents. Yet, while every parent loves his or her kids, having children can also bring many kinds of stress to a marriage.
According to a recent study, some of this stress is particularly pronounced in the weeks following kids' summer breaks from school. In fact, as kids reenter the classroom in the fall, nearly one out of five parents consider filing for divorce.
Financial difficulties brought on by the kids being home for summer major stressor
In the new study, released in late summer of 2013, 1,244 parents were polled as their kids returned to school. Nearly 20 percent of the parents reported that they were considering divorce or separation once their kids were back in school in the fall.
Why all the marital discord as summer break comes to a close? One reason cited by researchers was the financial stress brought on by the summer holidays. Almost half of the respondents to the poll -- 46 percent -- reported increased financial pressure over the summer months. Summer can be a challenging time financially for parents, as childcare costs and the expense of taking family vacations take their toll on the family budget.
Anecdotally, parents' emotional reasoning over the summer can also come into play.
"[P]arents may give their marriages 'one final go' over the holidays, or delay any proceedings until the children are back at school because they don't wish to spoil the family's break," Marilyn Stowe, one of the contributors to the study, told the Huffington Post. "I suspect that a relationship in trouble may be too damaged to be rescued by a holiday -- but can easily be broken by it."
