/24-7PressRelease/ - TIBURON, CA, July 01, 2008 - Dentists chose cosmetic dentistry when they were asked about their favorite treatment options in a recent survey by dental marketing company The Wealthy Dentist. Cosmetic dental work was the clear winner, pulling in over one-third of the total vote (and one-half of the general dentist vote). Dental implants were the runner-up.

There were distinct differences between general dentists and specialists. While nearly half (48%) of general dentists favored cosmetic dentistry, only 16% of specialists did. Among specialists, dental implants were the preferred treatment option.

There were also notable differences between urban and rural dentists. Rural dentists were significantly more likely to vote for cosmetic dentistry as their favorite option. (While 50% of rural dentists chose esthetic dentistry, only 29% of urban dentists did.)

Invisalign, an orthodontic treatment option that looks better than conventional braces, is popular among urban and suburban dentists. While Invisalign was the favorite treatment option of one-quarter of urban dentists, no rural dentists reported feeling the same way.

Of course, for every dental treatment option, there's a dentist who swears by it. Though sedation dentistry was not the top choice in this survey, many practitioners love offering dental sedation services like nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation.

Sometimes dentists' favorite options are the high-tech ones. "I love taking digital impressions with my new Cadent iTero!" raved a California dentist. A Maryland dentist called out lasers, while a North Carolina colleague singled out Cerec.

Other dentists prefer old-fashioned dentistry. "I like crowns and bridges," said a Canada dentist. Other favorites that were mentioned include amalgam, conventional orthodontics, third molars (a.k.a. wisdom teeth removal), and reconstructive dentistry.

Many practitioners have their favorite specialty areas. "I like periodontal plastic surgery," declared an Arizona periodontist. Also mentioned were endodontics, TMD/TMJ, dentures, and smile makeovers.

"With so many 'cosmetic dentists' out there, this doesn't surprise me," said Jim Du Molin, dental management consultant and founder of dental marketing resource The Wealthy Dentist. "But I did expect to hear even more enthusiasm about sedation dentistry."
