Glaucoma Risk Awareness Helps Hudson Valley Seniors Prevent Vision Loss

"What we want to alert our community to is the fact that the older you are, the greater your risk of developing glaucoma. Increasing age is an important factor," remarked Ophthalmologist Andreas Wolter, M.D.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY, January 09, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Once you enter your 40's, the risk of glaucoma begins to increase-and upon reaching the age of 60 the risk of glaucoma increases by 4-9 times, even without any family history or medical issues. In addition, if you have either systemic or eye diseases that impair circulation-such as diabetes this can further increase your risk," explained Dr. Wolter. "Given the rate at which our Hudson Valley senior population and baby boomer population are growing-along with the increased prevalence of glaucoma in these age groups, we felt it was important to build greater awareness of glaucoma risks to help prevent glaucoma related vision loss," commented Satish Modi, M.D. of Seeta Eye Centers.

"In addition, recent research suggests that the risk of developing glaucoma is increased among women who have taken oral contraceptive birth control pills for long periods of time as well as women who have entered natural menopause at an early age. Other patients we need to watch carefully for glaucoma are those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea seems to increase the risk of developing glaucoma considerably," cautioned Dr. Modi.

As Prevent Blindness America has designated January as National Glaucoma Awareness Month, Seeta Eye Centers advises patients that a critical element in managing glaucoma risk and preventing vision loss from glaucoma is to be consistent in having regular eye exams at the time intervals recommended by your eye doctor.

Seeta Eye Centers is conveniently located for patients from throughout the Hudson Valley.
