CARY, NC, December 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the spirit of the holiday season, Glenaire Continuing Care Retirement Community residents have raised funds to support Stop Hunger Now and are preparing for a meal packing event on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Stop Hunger Now, a Raleigh-based firm, is an international hunger relief agency providing food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world

Glenaire residents set up a committee to organize the program and kicked it off by hosting a speaker from Stop Hunger Now. They organized a drive to raise $2,500 to provide 10,000 meals. The response was so great they far exceeded their goal raising $5,000 enough for 20,000 meals. On January 11, staff from Stop Hunger Now will set up their equipment at Glenaire and will assemble the meals with a volunteer group of over 100 Glenaire residents and staff working in shifts.

"The response to this drive is overwhelming," said Chet Black, a Glenaire resident. "We are proud to support such a worthwhile organization and it could not have been done without such a dedicated committee. It was really a great thing for the group to experience."

Stop Hunger Now provides over 70% of its meals to support transformational development programs such as school feeding programs, vocational training programs, early childhood development programs, orphanages, and medical clinics. A packaged meal includes dehydrated foods, rice, dried vegetables and a seasoning packet of vitamins and minerals which is good for two years after it is packaged. Each meal costs $0.25 to put together. These funds are used to acquire the ingredients purchased on the general commodities markets, where they get reduced rates on most of the ingredients.
