SAN FRANCISCO, CA, January 19, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Horvitz & Levy LLP announces the elevation of Felix Shafir to partner. In addition, the firm has added Emily Cuatto as an associate.

"The elevation of Felix is well-deserved. He is an excellent appellate lawyer and has demonstrated exemplary leadership at the firm and in the community," said Partner David Axelrad. "Also, with the addition of Emily and her in-depth legal knowledge and superior client service, we are poised for continued success in 2013."

Shafir's trial and appellate experience covers a broad range of substantive areas, including commercial litigation, employment disputes and employer liability, environmental litigation, unfair competition and antitrust lawsuits, class action defense, federal and state securities issues, punitive damages liability, and immigration law. He has assisted with one of the largest wage-and-hour class actions in California and, in that capacity, helped pioneer several defenses to liability for meal period, rest break and waiting time penalty claims. Shafir has worked on appeals and writs in the California Court of Appeal and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is a member of the California State Bar Committee on Appellate Courts, which reviews proposed changes to the rules governing California appellate litigation. Shafir earned his J.D., cum laude, from the Northwestern University School of Law (1999) and his B.A., cum laude, from the University of California, Los Angeles (1996).

Prior to joining the firm, Cuatto was a litigation associate in the Santa Monica office of Bingham McCutchen LLP, where she handled complex commercial litigation matters including insurance coverage disputes, contract disputes, and lawsuits arising out of mergers and acquisitions. She previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable Milan D. Smith, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Cuatto earned her J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law (2008) and her B.A. from Stanford University (2003).

Since 1957, Horvitz & Levy LLP has been dedicated to appellate litigation. One of the largest firms in the nation to focus exclusively on appellate litigation, the firm is focused on winning appeals for professionals, individuals, businesses and organizations in a variety of industries. Based in Los Angeles, the firm is focused in the areas of business and commercial law, class actions, consumer law, entertainment, financial, First Amendment, healthcare, insurance, intellectual property, labor and employment, premises liability, products liability and toxic torts, public entity liability and real property.
