Laurence began his career as an Immigration Attorney and Counselor in 1977, handling immigration and visa matters while in private practice in Bethesda, Maryland. He worked briefly for the State of Maryland and for United State Congress handling mostly immigration matters. On July 1, 1980, Mr. Johnson left Congress to return to private law work.

During his educational career, Laurence attended the University of Maryland where earned a Bachelor's Degree in 1970 and a Juris Doctor Degree in 1973. He is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Bar Association of Montgomery County, MD of which he was Chairman of the Immigration Section from 1986-1994, Maryland State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Laurence is also a Life Member of the National Eagle Scout Association.
