VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, November 10, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jon W. Irby, Administrator of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating excellence in his dedication and leadership as a middle school administrator.
A teacher and administrator who began his career with Virginia Beach City Public schools in 1974, Jon W. Irby currently oversees the day to day building operations of a middle school and the implementation of curriculum for social studies and fine and practical arts programs. His duties also include administrative management for local, state and national assessment and testing programs in the school as well as the transportation programs for the students. In addition, he spends much of his time observing instruction and counseling both students and teachers. He sees his job as primarily being responsible for the safety and welfare of his students and to provide counsel for his staff as they continue their professional growth to be better teachers.
Mr. Irby has received numerous awards and honors over the years, including teacher of the year, lifetime achievement honors and memberships for local, state and national Parents Teachers Associations of Virginia Beach, Virginia and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. He has also developed and facilitated teacher training workshops at local, state national and international conferences on education. Mr. Irby is an accomplished performer, working professionally since the age of 9. He has numerous professional credits in both legitimate and musical theatre and opera. With almost 50 years of stage experience, Mr. Irby has performed with the Virginia Opera and Savoyards at the Center Theater and the Harrison Opera House, the Old Dominion Players at the Virginia Stage Company's Wells Theatre and the Virginia Musical Theatre at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.
Mr. Irby became involved in his profession because of his experiences working with a childhood friend who was mentally disabled. His parents were instrumental mentors for community service and thus he has been committed to serving through his work and his daily actions. He attributes his success to his love for children, his dedication to life-long learning and his understanding of the importance of collaborative teamwork.
Mr. Irby is an alumnus of James Madison University, The College of William and Mary and The University of Virginia. His professional memberships, past and present, have included: Phi Delta Kappa International; Council for Exceptional Children; the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; Local, State and National Associations for Elementary and Secondary School Principals; Local, State, National and International Reading Associations; and Local, State and National Parents and Teachers Associations.
