Redwood City, CA, March 5, 2013
/Worldwide Who's Who/ -- Kathy Lynn Donner Parara, an educator for the Redwood City School District, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership, and excellence in educating youth for twenty-seven years.
Mrs. Parara became involved in her profession after receiving her bachelor's degree and multiple subjects teaching credential from California State University, Chico in 1985. She began her career at Crittenden Middle School in Mountain View, California and quickly became a grade-level team leader and English department chair. She transferred to the Santa Clara Unified School District where she began diversifying her teaching experience and taught at schools with different demographics and unique opportunities in working with culturally and socio-economically varied student populations. Mrs. Parara taught grades three, five, six, and seven at both the elementary and middle school levels. After eleven years of teaching, Mrs. Parara received her Master's Degree in Education, with a 4.0 grade point average, from Santa Clara University. She served as the principal of Westwood School in Santa Clara for five years and Bowers School, also in Santa Clara, for three years. She is proud to report that she was transferred to Bowers School to "jumpstart" the school out of Program Improvement status and was able to do so, in conjunction with Project Help, in one year. She also served on the local ACSA board in various roles and became their president for one year. Mrs. Parara was a special education major in college and demonstrated excellence in her support of both at-risk and special education students throughout her career. She was awarded Principal of the Year by the Santa Clara Unified special education department.
In 2008, Mrs. Parara joined the administrative team at Kennedy Middle School in Redwood City as an assistant principal. She was responsible for curriculum, teaching and learning, assessment, data analysis, teacher evaluation, student and school activities, School Site Council, and daily supervision. Throughout her career, Mrs. Parara has excelled in teaching language arts to hundreds of students from at-risk and unmotivated youth to academically gifted students. Her students claim that she not only teaches them about reading and writing, but about "life." Mrs. Parara utilized class meetings, writing journals, conflict resolution skills, and active language strategies to encourage students to be fine citizens as well as excellent students. In 2010, Mrs. Parara was awarded as an Educator of the Year by the Cleo Eulau Center in Palo Alto, California for her commitment to serving at-risk populations and working with teachers and resiliency counselors to reach the most challenging students in the school.
Mrs. Parara was diagnosed with breast cancer in October, 2011. Even as she has battled this disease, she has been involved in political campaigns in both California and Oregon to impose laws which require doctors to inform women about their breast density. Mrs. Parara has worked with the national organization, "Are You Dense?" and has co-founded the Southern Oregon Screen Team, a Susan G. Komen-funded organization which provides information about early screening and free and low-cost mammograms for underserved populations. Mrs. Parara has begun her own organization called KYOBD (Know Your Own Breast Density) and is committed to providing information to families about the importance of one's knowledge of breast density for the purpose of early detection and saving lives. Mrs. Parara has also documented her breast cancer journey with reflections on not only her cancer experience but her years of joy in the field of education at caringbridge/kathyparara. She plans to publish her CaringBridge blog as a book in the near future. Finally, for more information, please view
