, which offers healthy and happy pets for families, is speaking out on a new study that details just how special the connection is between animals and humans. The research illustrated that dogs are far more capable of understanding a situation from a human's point of view than scientists previously thought possible. The results of the study were recently published in a journal entitled Animal Cognition. The study itself remained focused on determining whether dogs have a "flexible understanding" of a human's perspective. Researchers looked at 84 dogs, and tested to see whether they were able to comprehend what a human was feeling by simply turning out the lights.
Both animal and owner were placed in a room that contained a bowl of dog treats that was off-limits. Scientists believed that if the dogs snatched the snacks when the lights were out, they were able to understand that their owners could not see their actions in the darkness. This implies that the animal understood a situation from the human's point of view. If the dog's behavior remained the same, then it became clear that the animal was not able to understand the owner's perspective.
The findings show that the pooches were four times more likely to steal the treats when the lights were off and the humans were unable to observe their actions. Dr. Juliane Kaminski from the University of Portsmouth explains that the results of the study were "incredible because it implies dogs understand that human can't see them, meaning they might understand the human perspective."
The professionals at Laughlin Kennels support these findings noting, "No dog owner will be surprised to learn that dogs are more likely to be disobedient when not being watched, but it is still an interesting conclusion to draw that our dogs are able to understand what humans perceive. However, most of us who live with dogs already knew that."
Though the findings prove promising when it comes to understanding just what dogs are able to see and comprehend, Dr. Kaminski explains that it is still not completely certain whether the study illustrates that dogs have a flexible understanding of the human mind. She explains that it was previously thought that only people were in possession of this ability. The team at Laughlin Kennels supports further research into this matter, and believes in the importance of fully understanding the dog-human relationship.
