/24-7PresRelease/ - SAN ANTONIO, TX, August 31, 2008 - As a singer/songwriter and a proud mother of two, Laura Marie understands the importance of staying healthy for her family and for her career. Now, as she prepares to run in San Antonio's inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, she hopes her example will help inspire others to set health goals for themselves.
"Just because you're a busy mom, or a working musician, or even both, it doesn't mean you can't take the time and effort to be healthy," says the San Antonio native, who performs regularly throughout South Texas. "It can be difficult to stay focused and keep to a regimen, especially when you're a musician who has to travel, but I've learned that the busier you get, the more important it is to stay healthy and fit." To accomplish that goal, Laura maintains a healthy diet and runs regularly. "If you can put the same kind of effort into diet and exercise that you do into your music, then you will see the benefits - you'll have more energy for your family, for your work, for all the things you need to do," she says. "You'll just feel better all the way around."
With its emphasis on music, including live performances at every mile of the race, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon has a special appeal for Laura. "When I'm running," she says, "I always hear music, whether I'm listening to it on my iPod or singing it in my head. So I love the idea of running a marathon and having a different band come up every mile, especially when it's in my hometown." The November race, a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, will be the first Rock 'n' Roll Marathon for San Antonio, but the third for Laura, who ran in the same event in San Diego, California several years ago and in Phoenix, Arizona earlier this year. "Those were great experiences for me," says the determined runner, who shaved 20 minutes off her running time and has added a weightlifting regimen to her schedule this year in the hopes of a stronger finish. "I didn't quite reach my goal last time, but I will get there."
Whether she is training for a marathon or in the studio recording her new CD (to be released in 2009), Laura hopes that by striving to reach her goals, she can inspire others to set their own: "I want people to see what I'm doing - a mom, a musician, and very, very busy - and realize that they can do it too. Maybe they don't have to run a marathon, but there's no reason moms, or anyone else, can't have a busy life and still be fit and healthy. There's room for both."
San Antonio's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon will be held on Sunday, November 16, with a Wheelchair Invitational race beginning at 7:25 AM, and Marathon and ½-Marathon races beginning at 7:30 AM. Other events that weekend will include a free Health & Fitness Expo on November 14-15, and a Headliner Concert (featured talent to be announced) on November 16, after the race. Both events will be held at the Alamodome (100 Montana Street).
