TORONTO, ON, October 18, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Toronto may be a mecca for performing arts, but for the growing population in the suburbs and busy lifestyles, the trek into town can often deter from enjoying a night out. Thankfully a growing number of local businesses in Scarborough have been actively supporting the local live music scene, giving their neighbours not only a place to reconnect, but also time back to themselves. ---
Like many of her friends, Scarborough resident, Victoria Yeh, was finding it more and more difficult to make time for an evening out. "Moving here from Edmonton was a big adjustment for me. My friends and I quickly got caught up in our careers and our homes, and by the end of the week, the last thing I wanted to do was drive forty-five minutes into downtown, hunt for parking, and not even get a start on my evening until past 11p.m.," says Yeh from her home in Scarborough.
When more often than not, staying home and renting a movie seemed like a better option than going out to see friends, Yeh decided it was time for change. As a musician, she craved going out to hear live music, but could never convince her friends who lived downtown to make the trek to Scarborough to join her. "I knew there must be others like me in Scarborough, who want to meet new people and who want to enjoy live music nearby," which according to Yeh, inspired her to start a social group called Scarborough Live Music Lovers! on the popular social networking site, Meetup.com.
Yeh hopes that the group will not only be a social gathering, but also an opportunity for local business owners, entrepreneurs and residents to network in a casual setting, while also supporting the venues that keep music alive in Scarborough. "We live in this huge metropolis called the GTA that is full of opportunity and excitement, but when it comes down to it, I think people are most content when they feel connected to their community. I really hope this group will give people a way to get to know their neighbours and to support local business."
The group's first events will be on Saturday October 19 at the Black Dog Pub and on Saturday November 2at Karla's Roadhouse. While there is no cover for either venue, to reserve a seat and join the networking group, advance tickets must be purchased online for $10, with all money collected going towards food and appetizers.
