WYOMING, MI, June 07, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- NFL Player Jared Veldheer and former basketball star Allyssa DeHaan will host football and basketball clinics for middle schoolers on Wednesday, June 19.

Proceeds from the events will be used to provide free student heart screenings through the Metro Health Hospital Foundation's Keeping the Beat Program.

The two-hour clinics, which will be held at Forest Hills Northern High School, are open to all West Michigan students who will be in grades five through eight beginning this fall. The sessions will each focus on fundamentals, leadership, nutrition, strength and conditioning.

The Jared Veldheer Football Camp will be led by Veldheer, a 2005 graduate of Forest Hills Northern and a two-time All-American football player at Hillsdale College. He has started in the last 43 games for the Oakland Raiders as a left tackle. Veldheer will be joined by a team of elite local football players who train at his PowerStrength Training Systems, a Grand Rapids gym for serious athletes.

The Allyssa DeHaan-Clark Basketball Camp will be led by DeHaan-Clark, a graduate of Grandville High School and four-year starter at Michigan State University. While at MSU, she was ranked fourth in both all-time rebounds and career points - one of only three Spartans to place in the top five of both categories.

Parents are welcome to attend and hear an information session from Dr. Ed Kornoelje, a sports medicine physician at Metro Health. He will discuss the importance of cardiac screenings for young athletes, injury prevention and concussion awareness during a session that will feature a question-and-answer period.

Cost to attend the camp is $15 per student and includes a camp T-shirt. To register online, visit
