London 2013: Major Museum Highlights

From blockbuster exhibitions to specialist shows, there's something for everyone in London's main museums in 2013.

LONDON, ENGLAND, January 29, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Priceless jewels, ice age art, Roman remains, Russian riches, 80s fashion, endangered species, a Bowie bonanza and the science behind the Big Bang. This is just a handful of topics covered by the London museum scene in 2013, which promises to be yet another ground-breaking year. LondonTown.com has left no stone uncovered in its new 244-page guide to London 2013, which includes write-ups of all the major museum exhibitions over the next 12 months and an in-depth article about the must-see shows in the capital.

Two blockbuster exhibitions stand out at the British Museum in 2013: 'Ice Age Art: Arrival of the Modern Mind', which presents some of the world's oldest sculptures and drawings alongside modern works by Henry Moore, Mondrian and Matisse to demonstrate how ancient art influences contemporary artists; and 'Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum', one of the undoubted highlights of 2013, which features 250 stunning finds from the Roman cities destroyed by Vesuvius in AD 79, and is the first exhibition on this subject in London in 40 years. These exhibitions - and many more - are covered in LondonTown.com's comprehensive London Events 2013 page.

Highlights at the Victoria & Albert Museum include an intriguing exhibition of the costumes, artwork, photographs and handwritten lyrics of David Bowie in a study of the pop icon's influence on fashion, sound, graphics, theatre and film. 'Treasures of the Royal Court: Tudors, Stuarts and the Russian Tsars' looks at the extraordinary items traded between Britain and Russia in the 16th century, while the V&A also has a summer show on London fashion in the 80s ('From Club To Catwalk') and a stunning study of jewellery from the Roman Empire to the present day ('Pearls').

Also part of the South Kensington triumvirate of museums, the Natural History Museum looks at evolution and endangered species in 'Extinction: Not The End Of The World?'. Renowned photographer Sebastiao Salgado is showcased in 'Genesis' while the ever-popular 'Wildlife Photographer of the Year' returns. The major exhibition of the year for the nearby Science Museum is a focus on the remarkable 'Large Hadron Collider' in Geneva, which is attempting to recreate the Big Bang in one of the greatest scientific endeavours of our time.

Design fans will enjoy a summer exhibition curated by the talents behind the 2012 Olympic torch, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, at the Design Museum, where later in the year Paul Smith is commemorated for his four decades in the business. Another British icon, the legendary Londoner Michael Caine, is the subject of a retrospective to coincide with his 80th birthday at the Museum of London.

More offbeat highlights from a truly diverse programme of events across London include the Royal Observatory's 'Alien Revolution', a small study of the way aliens have been portrayed in art and literature; the return of the 'Astronomy Photographer of the Year' competition at the same Greenwich venue; a thought-provoking look at modern state propaganda at the British Library ('Propaganda: Power and Persuasion'); a cracking family exhibition on 'Spies' at the revamped Imperial War Museum; and the Museum of London's major display of the 'Cheapside Hoard', a priceless cache of 16th-century jewels and gemstones discovered in a cellar in 1912.

All of London's best exhibitions are previewed on LondonTown.com's London Events in 2013 page.
