Los Angeles Tech Community Protests PIPA and SOPA Legislation

Senate vote on January 24th threatens to decimate Los Angeles tech start up community and tech hubs worldwide. Add your voice to millions of other concerned Americans.

SANTA MONICA, CA, January 19, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- DogTown Media LLC, a mobile app development company in Los Angeles, is working in conjunction with tech industry leaders to increase public awareness of the detrimental effects that PIPA and SOPA will have on the World Wide Web. The founders of DogTown Media seek to arm the public with practical tools to prevent the proposed censorship laws from passing.

The proposed laws, PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) were written with the intention to halt Internet piracy. However, the legislation has attracted scrutiny for granting traditional media companies and the government expanded powers to patrol and restrict universal access to the internet.

Political organizations with divergent agendas such as the Tea Party and ACLU have come together in opposition to PIPA and SOPA.

"Our goal is to make sure that the public outrage to this legislation resonates with political leaders in Washington D.C.," said Marc Fischer, co-founder of DogTown Media. Fischer continued, "If passed into law, PIPA and SOPA will destroy jobs, stifle innovation, and crush the entrepreneurial dreams embodied by an entire generation."

DogTown Media's website was blacked-out in protest of the proposed SOPA and PIPA legislation in solidarity with Wikipedia, Reddit, and other web properties on January 18th.

Arguments against SOPA and PIPA include:

- The FREE and OPEN Internet will NO longer be FREE or OPEN.
- Violations to the Constitution's protection of free speech.
- High paying jobs will vanish as new regulations make tech companies uncompetitive, forcing businesses to move abroad or shut down.
- The main objective of halting copyright infringement will come at a staggering cost and ultimately be ineffective.

You can prevent SOPA and PIPA from passing into law by taking a stand.

- GET INVOLVED: Call your Senator! Tell them to stand against PIPA on January 24th!
- MAKE YOUR MARK: Fill out the EFF Congressional e-mailer.
- SPREAD THE WORD: Tell others on Facebook and Twitter about the potential threat to the Internet.
- BOYCOTT: Stop doing business with corporations supporting SOPA and PIPA.

DogTown Media, has made additional resources available to aid in the fight against bad public policy on a section of their website. The Los Angeles iPhone app developers encourage individuals to educate themselves on the issues and join the protest movement in order to keep the internet open and free for all.
