January 24, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A class action lawsuit filed in San Francisco on January 7, 2010 alleges that Macy's sold jewelry containing gems and stones that had been artificially enhanced and filled with lead to conceal imperfections and overstate true carat weight misleading thousands of consumers across the country.

The action, filed by the Brandi Law Firm, details years of fraudulent conduct by Macy's including misrepresenting heavily glass filled and often heavily lead glass treated stones as natural rubies; selling gems from banned countries; selling Praseolite (a heated form of quartz) as "green amethysts"; and passing off black sapphires as "diamonds."

In addition to being less valuable than natural gems, the treated and filled stones are much more fragile, can easily become discolored during normal use and cleaning, and are difficult or impossible to repair.

Attorney for the plaintiffs, Thomas Brandi stated: "Macy's has been a trusted name for many years and it is very disappointing to think of the many people who have been deceived by these unfair practices. Macy's is selling something as real it knows is not. Hopefully Macy's will stop these practices, make restitution to its customers and begin to rebuild trust in what was once a great company."

One of Macy's deceptive practices, selling artificially enhanced rubies as natural, received national attention during a story aired on Good Morning America. That story, along with additional information regarding the Macy's jewlery lawsuit can be viewed online here: www.MacysJewelryLawsuit.com.
