Make Labor Day Travel Free of Auto Insurance Headaches

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA, September 02, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- For Americans who didn't get the chance to go out of town for the summer road trip, the upcoming Labor Day weekend may be the last chance to get away. While auto insurance coverage might not be the first thing soon-to-be road-trippers are thinking about, squaring away such matters could help vacationers sidestep potential snags. OnlineAutoInsurance.com encourages car insurance policyholders to drive safely over the holiday weekend and to check with their insurance companies or agents to make sure that they will be adequately covered when crossing state lines.

Luckily, most coverage providers accommodate customers traveling interstate. Not only will many extend protection when the insured vehicle is taken out of state, but, if an insured driver enters a state in which minimum coverage levels are higher than the home state, the policy may automatically adjust to meet the higher levels in the event of an accident. Motorists, though, would be well-advised to check with their agents before assuming that this is a part of an insurance policy.

Drivers also might want to consider purchasing affordable auto insurance coverage types that may not be legally required but could prove invaluable when traveling from state-to-state. Road-trippers who plan to be making their way to Carslbad Caverns in New Mexico, for instance, might want to consider adding uninsured motorist coverage to a policy. That's because the Land of Enchantment, unfortunately, was estimated by the Insurance Research Council to have the highest uninsured motorist rate in 2007, with an estimated 29 percent of drivers on the road lacking coverage. With nearly one-third of this state's driving public estimated to be uninsured, it might do a traveler good to get this additional insurance, which often can be inexpensive.

Finally, drivers need to protect themselves by being even more careful than usual when traveling this holiday weekend. That's because the Labor Day holiday historically has been one of the most dangerous times to drive. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Labor Day places as one of the six days in which the number of vehicle occupant fatalities is at its highest.
