-- A man was recently charged with solicitation of a minor in Pennsylvania. The suspect oversees operations of a well-known online newspaper, The Capital.
The suspect, 55, was a target of an online undercover scheme. He is now accused of trying to have sexual relations with a girl that he purportedly thought was 14 years old. In actuality, the suspect engaged in online conversation with members of an investigative Child Predator Unit from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
According to court documents, a special agent in the child predator unit began talking to the suspect in August 2012. The agent asserts that the suspect used a webcam to send compromising pictures to the "14-year-old girl." In the course of several discussions, the agent claims that the suspect mentioned a former incident involving inappropriate contact with a 13-year-old girl, who was a friend of his daughter.
Once the investigation moved forward, Yahoo! Inc. provided authorities with an array of online screen names that may have been associated with the suspect. In total, charging documents cite 13 online interactions between the suspect and the undercover online agent.
At this time, the man faces five criminal counts, including aggravated indecent assault, illicit contact with a minor and statutory sexual assault
. He is currently being held in a local detention center.
A record search suggests that the man has never faced criminal charges in the past. The suspect has worked for the online newspaper, The Capital, for over two decades. He has been the interactive media editor since May 2008. Moreover, the suspect has held alternative positions with the company, including an Internet director, photographer and page designer. The editor of the newspaper asserts that the charges are serious, and the newspaper is currently looking into matter.
Internet crimes involving minors
The increased computer and online usage over the past twenty years has provided authorities with many opportunities to trap participants of illegal online activity. In the aforementioned story, the man was targeted by an online undercover operation. Many agents are present in online chat rooms and are waiting to catch potential child predators in the act.
Charges related to the online solicitation of a minor are not taken lightly in Pennsylvania. These crimes are considered egregious, and authorities and prosecutors are not lenient with suspects accused of any matters involving young children. If you have been charged with a serious sexual offense, take the time to contact a local criminal defense attorney. The allegations, alone, will be difficult to deal with -- even in the face of innocence. For this reason, it is imperative to have an experienced legal professional by your side. A sex crime
attorney can try to bring about the best possible outcome for your case.
