PHILADELPHIA, PA, November 01, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/
-- An article in The Huffington Post states the maker of Bumbo baby seats recently recalled nearly four million of its products. The recall comes on the heels of over 20 reports of infants who suffered skull fractures after falling out of the seats. Experienced personal injury attorney Michael A. DeMayo
commented on the recall.
The article shared information from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Commission indicated babies can squirm their way out of the seats, subsequently bumping their heads on the floor in some cases. The seats are crafted of molded foam and are not intended for use on raised areas. Popular retails such as Babies 'R Us, Wal-Mart and Target sold the seats for a nine-year period between 2003 and 2012.
"The safety of our children has to be put before profits, and the smart thing to do is yank these products off the market. Sometimes the difference between serious injuries and death is the threat of litigation or some watchdog agency taking steps to notify the public. While it would be nice to assume a business would do the right thing and put people before profits, sadly the opposite is often the true way of doing business for some companies," noted DeMayo.
According to the article, the latest recall comes on the heels of a previous October 2007 recall of approximately one million seats. During that recall, the company added labels that warned against placing the small seats on raised surfaces.
Michael A. Demayo commented, "Being a responsible corporate citizen includes making sure that your product will not injure the consumer and your target audience. If the health and safety was the first priority of Bumbo, they would have pulled all of their baby seats from the market as soon as they were aware that this was a safety problem."
The Huffington Post article noted the Bumbo Company released a statement to inform consumers it planned to add a restraint belt to new seats. Owners of existing seats are able to contact the company for a restraint belt to add to their seats as well. The company also noted the seat was intended for use only on the floor under adult supervision.
