Mobile Broadband 'Dongles' Overtaking Landline connections
The ease and falling costs of USB modems - or dongles - is leading to a rapid uptake of the mobile broadband internet technology, according to reports.

/24-7PressRelease/ - BURY, UK, June 06, 2008 - Telecoms provider Vodafone claims that dongles, which plug straight into a computer and provide instant internet access, are "flying off the shelves".

Having bought a USB modem, customers who have subscribed to a service can connect to the web wherever there is mobile signal.

So high is the demand for the service that Vodafone has hired an extra 450 staff to sell mobile wireless broadband, while more than one in five of 3's new monthly package customers are buying dongles.

Dongles can be plugged into a computer USB port and using a 3G signal, bypass the need for a fixed home telephone

According to Fool.co.uk, this could save surfers 203 a year when compared to paying line rental, broadband costs plus activation fees for BT's Broadband Option 1.

"It is absolutely taking off, people are loving the broadband dongles," says Jessica Mcardle of Top 10 Broadband. "Lots of people are using laptops and wanting to have more flexibility."

The online magazine predicted that if those trends continue then mobile broadband internet connections will become the dominant technology within two years.

"Dongles eliminate the need for a costly fixed phone line, allowing you to access the internet from wherever you are, with no plugs or cumbersome wires involved," said Szu Ping Chan from the finance website.

She explained that dongles are likely to appeal to people who don't already have a home phone line or people often on the move, such as students and businesspeople.
