New iPad Story App - Three "Little" Pigs - Helps Parents Talk With Their Children About Teasing and Bullying

Pigs aren't little: Big Bad Wolf apologizes for being a bully.

BELLEVUE, WA, October 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nurturing Tales, creator of story apps with a message, has released its second interactive story for the iPad, the Three "Little" Pigs: A Summer to Remember. This classic tale has been reimagined with positive messages and teachable moments to help parents talk with their children about teasing and bullying. As the pigs match wits with the Big Bad Wolf, parents can reference special tips designed to encourage a conversation around empathy and compassion.

"Pigs aren't little and that always struck me as odd," said Kevin Horn, the app's creator. "So we modified the plot to have the Big Bad Wolf use "little" in a mocking manner and tease the pigs because he thinks they're fat. Children often tease one another over differences, so why not use that metaphor to blend an examination of bullying into this classic tale?"

Two Books in One
The app is designed to have distinct messages for two audiences; kids will enjoy an engaging tale with beautiful illustrations and animation, while parents can explore special tips and a reference section, at their leisure, to learn more about how they can use the story to talk with their kids about teasing, bullying, and empathy.

As Horn explains, "When the Big Bad Wolf starts calling the pigs "little," we added an icon on the page that provides tips parents can use to discuss how teasing often focuses on differences - physical, social, racial, or mannerisms. We also provide some suggested questions such as: How do you think the pigs felt when they were called little? and, Do you know children who are teased because they are considered different?"

October is National Bullying Prevention Month
"This is a subject that's important to me and I've spent more than a year researching and working on this project," continued Horn. "That research has been summarized in a special parents section at the end of the app so parents will have a strong foundation and additional resources if they choose to continue learning more about this important issue."

The Three "Little" Pigs: A Summer to Remember is currently available for the iPad through Apple's App Store for $3.99. An iPhone version is under consideration.
