AMMAN, JORDAN, June 29, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Professor Edward Guiliano, president of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Dr. Mohamed Hussein, NYIT Executive Chairman in the Middle East, inaugurated the NYIT Park in the first circle of Jebel Amman.

Constructed along modern lines of public parks, the newly inaugurated park is designed to provide recreational facilities, reduce daily children run-over car accidents and provide a secure playing and leisure environment. The park's facilities, chosen in coordination with Amman municipality, consist of entertainment games, and service facilities.

Dr. Mohamed Hussein, NYIT Executive Chairman said that "The inauguration of the park reflects the university's policies and its vision of providing local communities with services by participating in constructive projects and national initiatives."

He added that the NYIT Park contributes to the traffic parks project launched by the Greater Amman Municipality. The project aims at involving the private sector in the rehabilitation of children's parks. A field study conducted by the municipality's Traffic Awareness Department concluded that children run-over injuries were mostly caused by the very limited numbers of playground areas available for children."

For its part, the municipality has provided NYIT with a 600 sq m piece of land in the first circle area. The university undertook to pave and rehabilitate this piece of land, plant trees and ornamental plants, provide it with entertainment and leisure games as well as other service related facilities to attract children and their parents.

"Reducing children run-over incidents requires raising children's traffic awareness. Thus, we are looking forward to cooperate with the municipality in raising children's awareness on road risks, equipping them with needed skills and teach them safe traffic behavior to avoid run-over car accidents. This could be done by providing children with traffic related information and through applying the knowledge children gain inside the park. Such an effort will contribute to spreading comprehensive and integrated awareness among all the society's segments and reduce traffic run over accidents," stressed Dr. Edward Guiliano, President of NYIT.

NYIT, a non-profit university, has had a presence in Jordan since 2001 under an academic agreement with the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). NYIT offers Undergraduate and Graduate programs in three fields, including business administration, computer sciences and fine arts. The university promotes channels of communication between its students and the mother university by providing students with the opportunity to study certain courses in NY.
