North Texas Start-up Focuses on Changing Students' Attitudes towards School through Social Mentoring

Amumba connects community to support local students' achievements
FORT WORTH, TX, February 07, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The very name of Fort Worth-based educational technology company, Amumba, is a Ngie term for community. Set to officially launch Wednesday, February 12, 2014, Amumba is a social mentoring platform that rewards students for doing the basic things they need to do to excel academically. Students, or 'mentees', gather a network of mentors to follow their social and academic progress. Mentors can be parents, teachers, family friends, or even businesses looking to give back to the community. Students post achievements or goals to their online profile which mentors can then approve and reward. "Amumba will connect families together and get them directly and deeply involved in [collaborating with] teachers to help students meet their goals," says Roland Omene, founder and CEO.

These days, of course, cyber issues such as identity theft and bullying are a paramount concern. In order to sign up for an account with Amumba, the student's school must be registered with the company first. Students can then sign up for an account and add mentors and even other students to follow their progress. Only students may issue invites to mentors and friends, and must be registered under a parent's email account if they are under the age of 12. Amumba is free to use, easy to learn, and provides a safe, controlled environment in which to foster the child's educational and social progress.

Omene beta tested the program through his first company, Frog Tutoring, with the tutors in his employ. The site has already garnered national attention and was selected by TechCrunch Magazine as one of twenty tech start-ups in the state of Texas to participate in their Austin Meetup + Pitch Off. The soft version launched September 2013, the public version to debut at the Company Launch in February 2014.
