Wearing custom made orthotics fitted by a podiatrist is the best way to ensure the proper fit and treatment.

OLNEY, MD, January 08, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The single most common cause of heel pain are bone spurs and plantar fasciitis, and these two conditions often occur together. Heel spurs are caused by a buildup of calcium deposits on the bottom of the heel bone. The result is a thin protrusion at the bottom of the heel bone that can extend as much as a half-inch.

Olney heel pain and spurs can have many causes. Excess weight and obesity, strain on the muscles and ligaments due to extended time standing, walking or running can all eventually lead to spurs. Additionally, some heel spurs are caused by abnormalities with gait, arch problems, poorly fitting shoes and increasing age.

The Olney heel pain associated with heel spurs are usually assumed to be a cause of the bony protrusion, but that is actually not usually true. The source of the pain is most often from inflammation of the ligament connecting the heel and foot, known as the plantar fascia. The protrusion of the spur often causes the entire ligament to become inflamed and painful when standing, walking or running. This condition is known as plantar fasciitis.

Heel pain Olney from plantar fasciitis can become intense when attempting to stand and walk after periods of rest. The first step in the morning may result in excruciating pain, with the pain diminishing progressively throughout the day. In some people the plantar fascia becomes so inflamed it becomes too painful to bear any weight on the affected foot.

Among the various treatment options for heel spurs and plantar fasciitis, your Olney foot doctor may suggest minimizing impact by limiting walking and running during the treatment period as well as stretching exercises that strengthen the plantar fascia ligament. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen can also be used to reduce inflammation; In more advanced cases corticosteroids may be injected directly into the affected area.

Another excellent treatment for Olney heel pain is orthotics that are inserted into footwear. Wearing custom made orthotics fitted by a podiatrist is the best way to ensure the proper fit and treatment. The foot doctor Olney will examine your feet and determine the exact source of pain. Precise measurements will be taken and orthotics will be made to specifically fit your foot and your needs.

When conservative treatment fails to relieve the pain from a heel spur, surgery is sometimes necessary. Because of the long recovery time involved and the risk of damaging surrounding nerve tissue during surgery, it is considered a last resort treatment for heel spurs and plantar fasciitis.
