ORLANDO, FL, September 26, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nikki Ho, the departmental liaison for Orlando Health's Physician and Professional Services, has been recognized for her achievements in public health with the annual Dream Award presented by Everest University-South Orlando.---
Ho, 26, who received her bachelor's degree in health care administration from Everest University, was hired shortly after graduation by Orlando Health. Nikki worked at a medical practice while attending Everest, where she also received an associate degree in medical insurance billing and coding.
"I have had a huge advantage in that I worked six years with patients and doctors as the manager of a private medical practice before joining Orlando Health two years ago. Internists at the medical practice treated patients in all areas, from preventive medicine to cardiology. I took advantage of learning from all these experiences and it has paid off to advance my career," Ho said.
Ho was born in Orlando after her parents immigrated in the 1980s from Hong Kong in search of opportunities and a better life. Her father works as a chef and her mother is a server. Her younger sister is a graduate of the University of South Florida.
"In the Asian culture there are a lot of high expectations, especially in getting an education. My parents were disappointed in me when I didn't know my career path after I graduated from high school and I was working at an ice cream shop. I was under a lot of pressure. When I was hired at the medical practice where I did my internship for Everest, my parents were thrilled," Ho said.
"Nikki is an exceptional young woman who overcame family pressures that created a fear of failure and grew to exude confidence in herself and her abilities. It was a pleasure to teach and advise her at Everest," said Dr. Brad Miller, dean of students at Everest University in South Orlando.
At Orlando Health's Central Business Office, Ho works on revenue management, analyzing medical trends developing processes to ensure there will be no cracks in revenue for numerous divisions. In her off hours she is kept busy with planning her upcoming wedding.
"My parents didn't want my sister and me to end up in their shoes, working two or three jobs to support themselves. They wanted us to be better off than they were. That's the same mindset for my future family. Education will have an important role," Ho said.
