Parents & Kids: Share Your Family Stories!
Deadline Extended in Immigration Writing Contest

SAN ANTONIO, TX, January 23, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The holidays are over. You and your children are home now, after sharing gifts, meals, and stories with your friends and relatives. Maybe you've had a chance to teach your kids a little about your family, and maybe they'd like to learn more about where you or your relatives came from. Well, there's a fun opportunity for your kids to do just that!

During the holiday break, the "Celebrate America" writing program (sponsored by the American Immigration Council and hosted locally by the law firm De Mott, McChesney, Curtright, and Armendariz) has been accepting submissions from fifth graders in public, private, and home schools. The original deadline for the program was December 21, but because many families were in the middle of the holiday rush, that deadline has just been extended to Tuesday, February 12.

That day is the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. As Joseph B. De Mott, founding partner in De Mott, McChesney, Curtright, and Armendariz, explains, "With the film Lincoln winning numerous awards, Abraham Lincoln is on everybody's mind right now. So his birthday will help make our new deadline more memorable."

The theme of "Celebrate America" is "Why I Am Glad America Is A Nation of Immigrants," and they can write an essay, a poem, an interview, or anything about that subject (as long as it's limited to 500 words or less). The six best entries will be decided by a panel of judges, and the winners will receive cash and other great prizes.

To enter your child in the program,

1. Contact Patti at the law firm, either by calling her at 210.590.1844, or sending an email to patricia@demottusa.com, to ask for a Release Form that you and your child will need to sign.

2. If your child attends a public or private school, call your school and ask for a copy of proof of your student's enrollment in the fifth grade (such as a report card, a transcript, or a letter from the student's teacher, the school principal, or the guidance counselor).

3. Once your child has completed their entry, make sure it includes a cover page with their name, address, grade, age, school, and telephone number, and an email address.

4. Mail the complete entry, or deliver it in person, to:
