Pennsylvania Plastic Surgeons Seeing Evidence of National Trends

The surgeons at Stratis Gayner Plastic Surgery say their patients from Lancaster and Harrisburg are in line with new national data showing increases in silicone breast implants, eyelid surgeries, facelifts, and procedures for men.

HARRISBURG, PA, March 16, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- New cosmetic enhancement statistics show national trends are lining up with popular procedures in Pennsylvania, according to the physicians at Stratis Gayner Plastic Surgery (www.focusedforyou.com) who serve patients from Lancaster to Harrisburg.

For example, the surgeons say their patients now choose silicone breast implants in about 3 of every 4 breast augmentation procedures at their practice. That mirrors the 2013 nationwide statistics recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), which showed U.S. women chose silicone over saline implants in 72% of augmentation procedures last year.

"Our breast augmentation patients are choosing silicone breast implants much more often," says Dr. John Stratis, who specializes in breast enhancement surgery and body contouring procedures for the 2-surgeon practice.

Advances in implant durability and aesthetics, represented by the cohesive gel silicone implants approved by the FDA, are the main reason for the increasing popularity, Dr. Stratis says. They are now made by 3 major implant manufacturers, and he says most women believe they mimic the look and feel of natural breasts.

The annual statistical report from the industry group showed increased interest in facelifts, eyelid surgeries, and minimally invasive procedures such as injectable treatments, among other trends.

"One of the most interesting trends I've seen during the past few years is the increasing number of men who are coming in for cosmetic procedures," says Dr. Scott Gayner, who specializes in surgical and non-surgical facial procedures. "It is more common now for a man between 45 and 60 to get a facelift at our Harrisburg practice. I think there are multiple reasons for this shift, including the increasing use of social media and teleconferencing in the workplace."

Male breast reduction surgery, called gynecomastia surgery, also saw an 11 percent increase in 2013.

Dr. Gayner says anti-aging injections, such as dermal fillers and BOTOX Cosmetic, continue to see increased popularity among both the women and men their practice serves throughout Harrisburg and Lancaster County.

"Cosmetic surgery isn't appropriate for everyone who wants a more youthful look," he says. "Soft tissue fillers such as JUVEDERM are driving the increased popularity nationally and at our practice, mostly thanks to how cost-effective and convenient they are."

The use of soft tissue fillers increased by 13 percent from 2012 to 2013, according to the ASPS annual statistics. Meanwhile, the number of facelifts and cosmetic eyelid surgeries performed nationally both increased 6 percent in 2013.
